Years ago, my sister made one of these sunflowers for her front door and I was fascinated so I finally decided to make one of my own and show you all how to do it also.

Believe it or not I started out with this "twisted paper cord".

I tried finding this twisted paper cord at Joann's Crafts but they didn't have it so I had to get it on Amazon.

Now this was the hardest part of the entire project. The twisted paper twine had to be unwrapped and opened up. I cut the cord into 10 inch pieces and then had my "troops" (daughter and husband) unwrap them and open them up.

I found 3 different shades of yellow acrylic paint and painted each of the "petals". One shade was a darker color called "marigold". I didn't belabor this part or worry if I missed a few spots. I was looking for an overlook.

I painted the crown of the hat a dark brown color. Then I started gluing down the separate "petals" with a hot glue gun. I scrunched the base of each "petal" before gluing it to the base of the crown of the hat. I made sure to glue different shades of colors so it looks more natural.

To hide the place where the petals meet the crown of the hat, I put some brown excelsior which I bought at a crafts store.

I put a small amount of the excelsior around the brim. I think it gives it a more naturalistic look.

I bought some green ribbon and hung it from the back to give a look of a "stem".

I like that it has lots of variations of colors, don't you?

Happy Fall, everyone!!,

  3. That's a clever use of a hat as decor. I probably have an old holiday sunhat knocking around around somewhere that's a bit tatty and would be perfect for something like this.
