Pretty Petal Dresses

What to do With Flower Petals

I’ve been fascinated with making something with flower petals but they dry up and when they dry up they kinda turn brown and then they’re not pretty. But with a PICTURE, a digital picture,
it will always be just as fresh and pretty and brightly colored as it was when you made it. So, here is what I came up with...

Petal Dresses

Here is a tutorial on how to make the little Petal Dresses on a hanger.

This craft has to be made in the summer, obviously, because you need fresh flowers.

I use 110 lb white cardstock paper for the basis of the petal picture. Start by either drawing a little hanger or find one on the internet.

After you get the hanger all set on the page,  then go outside with a cup or vase filled with water and pick some fresh blooms. Pick the flowers that have no flaws as this will definitely show up in the picture. Here is my glamorous red plastic cup filled with flowers.

flowers in a cup

You need lots of little plant stems. Oh, and be careful when you take the flowers out of the cup – not to get water on the white cardstock paper or it will make a wrinkle. (how would I know such a thing?) :)

I cut 2 short stems for the straps of the dress. Believe it or not, I didn’t glue them down. I had to keep readjusting them every time something moved.  I was afraid that the glue would show because the stems are so thin.

Next, I put in a “bodice” of two lantana flower buds. These I glued down with Fabri Tac which is a glue for fabric and paper although I use it for mostly everything.

Then I used more short stems  to extend the bodice a little. There are 4 short stems here but I ended up adding another one to make it a little wider.

Then I took a large flower for the skirt and opened it up (this is either a Mandeville  flower or hibiscus as their flowers are large and wavy. This I glued down also. At least some of the stuff wasn’t shifting around. The next one I do I’m going to glue everything down...  :)

Then I have a huge hydrangea bush (8 feet high and 10 feet wide)... it’s immense. Anyway, this little green bunch on the waistband is a hydrangea bud before it opens.

Well, what do you think? This is one of those crafts that I’m pleased with.

This is the first one I made and there are some things that I would change a little and, of course, use different flowers, too.

After you get your “petal dress” done you need to find a bright spot that is not in direct sunlight. A lightbox might work really well but the picture needs to be taken directly above the paper. I ended up going near a west facing window and taking these pictures.

Once you get the digital picture of these little dresses you can print them out and make notecards or frame them or do anything you want with them.

I'd love to have you PIN this to Pinterest. Thanks!!

Have a great Sunday everyone!!
