How to make a Heart Pillow with a Ruffle

My Mom, my sister, and I have made pillows with ruffles for years so I thought I’d do a tutorial on this. Hope you like it.
White and pink! Perfect for Valentine’s Day, I think.

Pink Heart

To start, obviously you need 2 pieces of fabric cut into the shape of a heart. I don’t have a template. I just wing it mostly every time. I take a square and fold it in half and then cut a half of a heart. Most of the time it comes out pretty well. :)

template

The second thing to do is ruffle the lace. You can always sew a long stitch on the edge of the lace and then pull the thread to ruffle the lace.
OR you can get one of these nifty rufflers. These are great for ruffling anything, lace or fabric.

ruffler

Here the lace is going into the ruffler straight and coming out the back of the ruffler all nice and ruffley. Easy Peasy.

rufflings

Isn’t that nice? That’s the hardest part of making a pillow, really.
Here is the lace all ruffled.

laces

Now take one of the heart fabric pieces and take the lace and turn it upside down and start on the right side about 4 inches from the point. Start pinning and continue all around the point of the heart and up the other side.

ruffles

Here is the heart all pinned all around.

sew

Take the two ends of the lace and roll them together and pin down. I used to sew these two ends together but I found I can roll them together and they stay that way.

thread

Now it’s time to sew the ruffled lace onto the heart fabric. I have an incredible industrial machine that will sew through anything. Anyway, sew along on the lace where the ruffler stitch is.

lace 5

Sew all the way around. Now you have one heart fabric with lace sewed onto it with the lace facing in. And you have another plain heart fabric.

lace

Place the plain fabric onto the fabric with lace on it with the right sides together.

pink polka dot

Pin all around and turn over so you see the stitching on the other side.

polka dot

Sew right over the other stitch on the back of the heart with the lace ruffle. Don’t sew all the way around – be sure to leave about a 4 inch opening.

hearts

Then you need to make a slit with scissors at the very top of the heart in the middle. See picture below or it will bind when you turn the pillow inside out.

pillow heart

Turn pillow inside out and you have this:

pillow 3

Here is the opening.

pillow

Here is the stuffing and the unstuffed pillow. Let’s stuff it by putting a fist sized puff of polyester into the pillow, one at a time.

stuffing

Make sure you put a small puff of polyester in the point of the heart (I learned this the hard way) or the point will be hollow.

stuffing 2

Now to sew the pillow closed. I pin the opening closed then sew it by machine but when I first started I closed the pillows with a needle and thread by hand.

sewing

Wala!

almost done

Then I decided I wanted a little white heart applique on the front. This should have been done at step one. Duh. Since it wasn’t done at step one it has to be sewn on by hand which I don’t like doing but it has to be done this way now.
I don’t have a picture of this step but you can see the hand stitching if you look closely. Then I found this cute rosebud and glued that on with Fabri Tac glue (my favorite all around glue).

Here’s a picture of a little doll and the pillow. The setting? My Mom’s house. She has everything pretty!

Hope you all enjoyed this tutorial and I hope it’s clearly written and illustrated! I’d be glad to answer any questions, too, if anyone has a problem. I had lots of problems when I first started.
Best wishes, everybody.
