Repurposed Christmas Lights

Does anyone have a glass block like this? Last Christmas I bought this decorative glass block that had a painted snowman on the front and on the back there were small painted snowflakes.
I say WERE SNOWFLAKES because I scraped them off so that I could paint something different on the back. That way I could have a Christmas theme at Christmastime on one side and then after Christmas I could flip it to the other side and enjoy something different.  Well, you’ll see what I mean as we go along.
Here is the Christmas Glass Block. Isn’t it the cutest? I love the little snowman doing a happy dance. It has a set of tiny lights on the inside so the whole thing glows.
Christmas
I really still liked the snowman but I wanted something different for this time of year. Something for Spring and Summer.
Glass-block
Here I am scraping off the snowflakes with a putty knife from the 50’s which I bought at a tag sale. I always buy putty knives, screwdrivers, and hammers – also misc. tools – at tag sales. They are so cheap and these items seem to walk away on their own in my house.
Glass-block2
At first I wanted to paint tulips so I painted on long tulip leaves.
painted roses
But somehow when I started painting the “tulips” they turned into roses so I went with the roses. My art teacher, Hank, always said if you start painting a tree and it turns out looking like the Brooklyn Bridge – go with the bridge. So that’s what I did. (Hank has lots of sayings that you’ll see interspersed here and there among my posts).
flowers
I added some more pinks here and there. (Hank says that when you use a color in one part of the painting you should add that same color here and there throughout. It makes the whole painting look like it’s bathed in the same light. Should I mention here that Hank is an oil impressionist painter. He took lessons from Harold Wolcott whose works can be seen online also. Here is one of Hank’s paintings. You can see more of his paintings by going to Famous Artist’s School. He must still be teaching there. There is a bio on their site and more of his paintings. He also wrote a few books on impressionism painting.

Back to the matter at hand…. I added in some more pinks and greens.
painted flowers
When the paint was dry I wrapped this pretty wide pink ribbon around the whole thing. That added a base to glue the flowers on, too.

I found some silk flowers and large, dark green leaves in another arrangement and put them into action here by hot gluing them onto the top of the block.

Hmmm…. what more does it need?
It needs a bow!
055 (640x480)
Now this fills out the top a little.

Hank says that when you look at your painting don’t focus on just one part of the painting. Look at the whole painting. That’s what I try to do with my craft projects, too. The painting of the roses isn’t perfect but when you couple it with the flowers, the bow, and the lights, it’s a nice overall look.

Here is a different view.

Best wishes to all:

At Christmas I guess I’ll just have to put a different bow on the top and turn it around. Who knows? Maybe I’ll paint something different on it next time. :)
