My Soldier, My Hero

This is my solder in 1968 when he was in the Vietnam War. Here he is on a pass in Saigon.

When they first arrived in Vietnam, after a hellish, seasick, three week boat trip, they lived in tents and slept on cots. The weather was brutally hot. Later there was construction of metal buildings with bunk beds.

Here he is, my hero, in front of the latrines and showers. There was no indoor plumbing.

His tour of duty was for one year. We had just gotten married before he left and it was a very hard, hard year, but we got through it. I worried constantly although he was not in combat. He was in the finance corps so he was doing office work but he heard the bombs. At that time, there were little tape recorders so we sent each other voice tapes a few times a week  -- how special that was to get a tape and listen to his voice!

Today the soldiers can see AND hear their loved ones via their computers.
He left Vietnam just before the Tet Offensive which was an extremely dangerous time. The North Vietnamese troops and the Viet Cong staged a major offensive against the South Vietnamese towns and cities. There were many casualties.

He came home from Vietnam, was stationed in Oklahoma for a few months, and then we settled in Connecticut near both our families and started to raise our own kids  - 4 of them, two of our own and two adopted girls from Korea. Now we have grandchildren that we just love to pieces (and to spoiling). Some of them were at the Memorial Day parade to see Papa march.

Here he is marching in the Memorial Day Parade yesterday (well, to be truthful, this photo is from last year. I was all set with my camera and extra batteries yesterday and then found out I didn’t have the SD card in the camera! Man, that was a bummer!).
I bought him a hat last year that says, “Vietnam Veteran” on it.

Here is the hat I bought him. It shows the ribbons for service tour in Vietnam.
