Wrought Iron Bench Redo

Hi, everybody, and WELCOME. Hope you enjoy my post today about how I saved a wrought iron bench from the glue factory  junk pile. The guys, husband, son and nephew, were throwing out all the stuff we’ve had laying around, stuff needing painting and other sundry kinds of repair and redoings. They said I’m never going to get to do any of it. They had a HUMONGOUS PILE. They’d put stuff IN the pile and I dragged stuff OUT of the pile. This went on for a while and then son put this wrought iron bench in the pile.
THE LAST STRAW!!
It wasn’t that old. It was just a little rusty! See?

“Oh, you’re never going to do anything with this old bench”, said son.
“YES, I AM”, I said.
Then son said, “You know you’re not.”
And I said, “YES”.
So I dragged said wrought iron bench out of the junk pile, which was no small feat for me (at 5 feet and 1/2 inch tall). But I was determined they were not going to throw away that bench!! After I dragged the bench about 10 feet away from the pile, I ran in the house looking through my stash of spray cans. I found a Hunter Green Rustoleum and thought. Ah, HA!! I will show them. I found a Brillo pad (or was it SOS, whatever) and marched outside to SAVE MY BENCH.

Son jeered, “You need to sand blast that bench”.
“No”, I said, “This will work fine” (meaning the Brillo or SOS pad). (Wow, I don’t know if that is the correct punctuation there.) I proceeded to get MOST of the rust off the bench. I like to do things quickly so I didn’t get into micro scrubbing in, under, and around. (My readers know I don’t like to belabor a craft at all.) So it was quick believe me.
All the while they continued to bring out more good stuff to put on the junk pile. So I’ve got one eye on the bench and one eye on what they are bringing out.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                So I’m scrubbing along as son says, “The rust is just going to come right back.”
“No, it’s not,” I say.
Now I’m starting to spray the Hunter Green color onto the bench and it’s looking pretty spiffy and son says, “You should have taken the time to do it right.” Some part of me knows that’s true, but I ignore that.
I continued spraying and feeling TERRIFIC about the bench. I had just about enough spray paint to finish the job, too. I could have used a little more but that part was around the back and underneath so I thought, ‘who’s going to see that?’. (Wow, this punctuation is really getting to me. I have a little handbook on Punctuation for Writers, but who wants to take the time to look that up? Not I said the fly. Not me said the bee).
Anyway, it looked terrific, I felt terrific.
Then son says, “The rust is going to come through.”
I wasn’t going to let him rain on my parade so I said nothing as I admired my work. It looked like new. It really did. In fact, it looked better than when it WAS NEW! Yay. Happy ending for bench.

Then son says, “We’ll throw it away next year.”
