Pretty Spring Dog Collar Covers

I’m going to show you how to make the easiest, prettiest dog collar cover EVER out of pretty cotton quilting fabric! You don’t need to spend a fortune on an expensive collar for your pet. You can take pretty fabric and with a few straight stitches you can transform your pet’s old collar and what’s even better?! You can keep making them so that your dog/pet has a new one for every holiday! Pretty soon I’ll be making my dogs their patriotic collars. Okay, here we go.
I bought some pretty spring fabric at Joann’s.

An ordinary cheap nylon dog collar…
173 (800x600)
I laid the collar on the fabric to see how wide and how long to cut it.

I cut it 4 times the width of the collar, so if the collar is 1 inch wide then you need to cut the fabric at least 4 inches wide.
Then fold it in half with the right sides facing out and iron. This will make a nice crease and give it a finished look.

Put the collar in like this. Leave the collar in while you pin and sew it.

Before doing this turn the ends in so there is no raw edge. I didn’t even bother to stitch it closed. Oh, well. Quick is good.

I turned the edges under and pinned it. Then one quick stitch and you’re done!!
203 (800x600)
All finished. I did think about making it longer and then just letting the clasp go right inside the tube of fabric so you wouldn’t see the black at all but it didn’t happen.  The next one I make will be longer for just that purpose.

Oh, also, Melinda from Country Dreaming wondered if it could be slipped off to change collars. Well, no, not this one because I cut it too narrow to do that. Next time I'll cut it a little wider so that I can change collar colors anytime I want to, Thanks for the tip Melinda - helping make these pretty cotton collars more functional!

190 (800x600)
Isn’t it pretty, though? And the most exciting thing is that anytime I want to change the color for holidays or seasons I can and it’s no big deal. Cut, stitch, done!
I also made a collar like this and added a ruffle which I’ll show you next week. It’s nice, too, a bit more work but not too much. Quite doable.
Thanks for reading and Happy Springtime weather to everyone!!

  1. What a cute idea! Can this one be slipped off or do you have to cut if off?

  7. This is awesome! I make covers for my camera strap, I don't know why I haven't thought to make one for my puppy dog! Since he is only 5 lbs, I can gather up all my fabric scraps and make all kinds of collar covers :) Thanks for the great idea!
